Vanagaram House

The project was to transform a single-storey house into a two-storey, the additional floor for bedroom, and altering the existing partition walls to specifications. But the location of the staircase was not to be changed due to sentiments of the client.

The design began with expanding the dimensions of the house, with the front-opening leading into a vast garden. The staircase was redesigned to be one of the highlights of the project, linking the other living areas in the ground floor to the first.

The staircase area is clad using copper plates that are framed onto the steel section from the inside. This renders rusticity, complimenting the surrounding atmosphere. The pattern seen on the copper plates are machine-cut.

Cantilevered roof slabs give the huge balconies a more contemporary appearance. The front of the house faces a big garden, and is provided with a linear seating arrangement with a view facing the garden for and an induced sense of direction. The garden landscape and furniture was designed to compliment the climate of the tropical region.

At the open patio, a wooden deck with a sunken seating arrangement was also proposed.
