All architecture is great architecture after sunset; perhaps architecture is really a nocturnal art, like the art of fireworks. ¬ Gilbert K. Chesterton
For a leading educational institution in South India; the requirement was an administrative office with a glass façade.
The objective we set to design this site was to provide a glass building which responds with its surroundings. Challenge was to propose a naturally lit space during day without glare and manually lit responsive setup at night.
The idea was to design a building which is transparent as well as barred. A monotonous pattern of MS sections for the exterior and to have it completely glazed from inside is to create a sense of visibility from inside but not from outside.
To break the monotony of the façade a glazed balcony abruptly cantilevers, which is accessed from the directors room. This is to symbolise the status of its user in the building.
Glazed buildings when lit from inside the slabs are visible, and our interest was to camouflage that with the MS sections. So the Design was a series of different sized horizontal box sections placed at various heights to create a pattern.
The building was to symbolise a sense of modernism, and had to lift its surroundings as well. The proposed was a building that is open and interactive to its users and surroundings.
