Garden House
Located in a quiet residential neighborhood, the north facing site for this residential project was at the T-junction (Theru Kuthu) of 24’ Wide roads. The requirement was to build a 1500 Sqft. two bedroom house on a 2400 Sqft. Plot. The plan concept shaped around an existing plumeria tree and the main focus was to provide maximum landscape views with plenty of natural light and ventilation adhering to vasthu.
A Curved walkway cutting the front garden areas in two parts leads one to the patio which houses the existing plumeria tree. The façade of the house is a simple vertical pattern made of MS box sections pattern which secures the house as well as makes the lintel height patio roof appear taller. The car garage is a separate unit built on the north west of the site.
The owners love gardening and we wanted them to enjoy their plants from all the living spaces so we came up with a plan that focused on a hidden courtyard-deck on the eastern side bringing in the morning sun placed behind the yellow colored foyer wall creating an element of surprise on entry to the house.
The living room is well lit and ventilated with vertical window openings and a wide sliding window on the north which opens to a seating space (thinnai) next to the plumeria tree. The Vertical façade lines create privacy from the inside and also bring in a play of light and shadow.
The dining area is elevated by a feet from the living room to differentiate the living area that is public with the dining and kitchen area that are semipublic, however to establish a continuous space in space feeling and communication around the house , we openly planned the house and went for a ceiling without any visible roof beams , the beams were either inverted or concealed, this being evident in the plain ceiling and corner full height door-window in the ding area which slides on one side and folds on the other to expand to the eastern side courtyard space.
The staircase is made of leather finished granite and the wall is brick clad to eliminate staining. The Mesh design acts as a barricade for the open staircase and also becomes the background for the TV unit which separates the staircase area by creating layers in the openly planned living room.
The open kitchen is a functional island kitchen black and white themed with a separate service or utility area that can be accessed from the kitchen as well from the rear for the servants.
