Work
Keethhouse IV & VI
The vision of the project is to provide guests a natural, sustainable, minimalistic and simplistic living atmosphere in auroville. This project keethhouse phase 2 consists of four cottages of which we were commissioned to design two of them Number 4 and 6. The idea was simple to provide a cottage for a couple and to provide another one for four persons. The vision of the project is to use local and natural materials incorporating traditional and tropical building techniques. The roof is a casuarina A-framed structure with an attic space accessed through a ladder. The roof is made of dried coconut tree branches and finished on top with reeds locally known as keeth. In one of the houses the kitchenette is provided inside whereas in the other it is planned outside with an outdoor dining space with the view to the garden. The tropical vibe is set with the landscape combining with the exposed brick work and mud plastered themed walls. The random rubble renders the interior a rustic feel with an intimate connection to the space. The flooring and bathroom wall surfaces are oxide finished and the columns that bare the roof structure are locally sourced granite pillars hand cut. The space is designed to be singular yet interconnecting various functions keeping in mind the entire theme of the property, overall to design a low-cost nature oriented architecture this project aims to spread the awareness in today’s times and to have an image of what existed in the past.
